Switching over to a Raw Food Diet?
If you are considering switching your dog to a raw food diet, you may be confused by the conflicting information available on how the diet will impact your pet.
Unfortunately, there are a number of misconceptions regarding raw food diets that may have you believing they can negatively affect your dog.
To help you better understand a raw food diet like the ones available from Just About Pets, here are the 5 biggest myths surrounding raw food diets!!!
Myth 1: Dogs have adapted & live longer on commercial Kibble diets
Dogs have NOT adapted to a cooked food diet, as evidenced by the millions of pets sitting in the waiting rooms of veterinary clinics with periodontal disease, skin diseases, cancers, organ diseases, diabetes, obesity—diseases that have strong connections to cooked and processed foods.
Dogs are living longer today because of improved social status and advances in medical care.
Dogs are valued members of the family.
They sleep inside, are cared for, and receive regular medical attention.
Dogs used to be left outside to brave the elements, guarding houses and livestock.
When they could no longer do the job, they were disposed of.
Medical care was not important.
Myth 2: Raw Diets are not balanced
Raw meat diets that include a variety of bones and organ meat contain the proper nutrients and ARE balanced.
Raw foods contain the exact proportions of fat, protein, vitamins, minerals, and enzymes a dog needs. Your dog has little need for vegetables. Most of the nutrients in vegetables are unavailable to your dog.
Another concept of balance is the idea perpetuated by the pet food companies: “Dogs need complete and balanced nutrition in every meal.”
This is nothing but propaganda designed to make people buy into commercial dog food.
Do you eat a complete and balanced meal every time you eat? No! You eat a variety of foods over a period of time, without signs of nutritional deficiencies.
at Just About Pets we have balanced diets available, from all meat to whole prey to veggies and fruit mixes, we’ve got a wide variety of healthy choices for your beloved pet.
Myth 3: Raw Bones are DANGEROUS for my dog!!
Cooked bones ARE quite dangerous. Cooking changes the structure of the bone, making it indigestible and brittle. Raw bones are chewable, are fully digestible and are not dangerous for your animal. Bones are a really important part of a dogs diet, and a major source of calcium and phosphorus required for the maintenance of their skeletons.
Raw bones can be a healthy and safe part of your dog's balanced diet. Offering nutritional, physical and mental benefits of raw bones have been a necessity to the canine species' wellbeing for thousands of years. And it's no wonder—they help clean teeth, distract from negative behavior and provide much-needed care!!
Guess What?! We've got a whole freezer or raw dog bones from size small to large!!
Myth 4: Bacteria in Raw Meat is Harmful to my dog!
If your dog already has a compromised immune system or some underlying problem, they may be affected by bacteria. Healthy dogs have several natural defenses.
Their saliva contains lysozyme, an enzyme that lyses and destroys harmful bacteria. Their short digestive tract is designed to push bacteria through quickly without giving it time to establish.
Most of the documented cases of severe bacterial septicemia are from kibble-fed animals or animals suffering from reactions to vaccines.
Commercial pet foods have been pulled off shelves more than once because of bacteria AND molds that produce a deadly toxin.
Ideally your dog’s digestive system can handle bacteria in the gut without a problem.
Dogs’ bodies are built to prevent harmful bacteria like salmonella from invading the body and upsetting the healthy balance of intestinal flora.
Dogs have highly acidic stomachs as well as natural digestive enzymes and bile that help them process Salmonella and other bacteria without becoming ill.
It’s when dogs are fed kibble that things become an issue. Kibble doesn’t contain those live enzymes, so your dog’s digestive system can become overrun.
You can further avoid bacterial contamination if you choose, store and prepare your dog’s meals with good hygiene protocols in mind and get his meat from reputable suppliers such as holistic pet stores that sell certified made raw food diets!.
Myth 5: Raw Food will make your pet aggressive!
This is one of the biggest myths surrounding feeding a raw meat diet to dogs, and perhaps the one that has done the most damage.
The thought that feeding your dog a healthy, complete raw diet will turn him into a wild beast with bloodlust for small critters is common, but based on nothing but fear.
Feeding a raw meat diet won’t make your dog aggressive, but as with any food that your dog really enjoys, some dogs may be defensive or territorial when eating and won’t want to share! Teaching your dog good manners and polite behaviour around food is essential, regardless of the type of diet he eats.
A raw meat diet won’t cause or worsen any behavioural problems in your dog, nor turn him into an aggressive monster.
