Section #1.
3 Awesome Products to Cool The Pup Down

Sometimes it's the simplest solutions that really work isn't it?

In section #1 of our "Stay Cool" this summer guidebook I'm going to show you some different, easy to find, easy to use, product solutions to help keep your dogs cooler and happier this summer.

All these products work with one of our dogs favorite things to do...eat.

So, if you want to turn your dogs meals into a tasty and cooling part of their day, you're in the right spot.

Product #1  Slow Feeder Bowls

Frozen Dinners...Done the Doggy Way.

Slow feeder bowls are a great way of slowing down a gulpy eater...but here's the thing we've discovered in working with and listening to our customers here at Just About Pets.

These bowls are also freezer safe and they can be a great way of creating a delicious and chilling meal for your pup.

It's easy to do, take their food (if it's dry soak it in warm water so it gets mushy) or if it's canned or raw scoop it into the feeder.

Place the feeder in the Freezer for 15 to 30 minutes (until it gets ice cream level of frozen...not ice rink frozen) then pull it out and serve!

The dog will have a blast working it's way through the, mostly frozen, food and because it's cold it'll actually help cool the dog down.

Now, important to note, that this can work, but not as well, with a regular bowl. But, we've found with the slow feeder and the little channels for the food it just provides an extra level of engagement and fun for the dog. Plus, the food doesn't slip out of the bowl like one giant ice cube!

Product #2 High Quality Canned Foods

Have you ever had a bowl full of crackers and got that terrible pasty feeling all over your mouth?

Yeah...me too. I reached for the water right away!

Our Dogs suffer from this similar problem all the time if they eat mostly dry, kibble style foods. And...I know, I know it's supposed to help their teeth, but that's simply not true.

Us believing that our dogs teeth are being "scrapped" clean by kibble is like me believing that my 2 year old sons teeth are going to cleaned by me rubbing gold fish crackers on them...not going to work.

But, high quality canned foods, are packed full of moisture and nutrition, therefore they can really help both a dogs digestive system and their hydration levels when it's hot out.

The two types of cans you see in these pictures are both high quality and local canned food products, but you can use any high quality canned food to help your puppers beat the heat.

Two quick things...one the price point of the food does not, necessarily reflect it's quality. Ask a nutrition expert about quality if you have any questions (and yes Just About Pets has 2 Certified Canine Nutritionists on staff, in case you need one) and...

Two...this canned food thing can work wonderfully with product number one, to provide not only moisture, but also to keep them engaged and cooled down.

Product #3 Tasty Frozen Treats

Who doesn't love that jingle music when the ice cream truck is rolling through.

I'm willing to bet that even our dogs may have become familiar with that jingle and salivate at the thought of a tasty frozen treat!

But, here's the thing. The sugar found in ice creams and frozen treats is really hard on them. Especially when they're little guys (30 pounds or less).

Proportion is a hard thing to think about when we're giving our dogs treats and goodies. Imagine giving your yorkie or pom pom or cocker spaniel a few spoonfuls of your ice cream. That could be 2 or 3 oz, easily.

If that pup is 10 pounds and I'm the person given the ice cream is 200...contextually you have to multiple the ice cream volume by 20 to understand it's effect on the dog. In other words, giving your 10 pom pom a few spoonfuls of ice cream would be like giving yourself 40 oz of ice cream...

That's 2 and a half pounds of Ice Cream!

So, sweet frozen treats are really hard on our pups, when not done carefully.

But, the great thing is there are lots of awesome products on the market designed and formulated for dogs that don't have all the sugar issues that sweets for you and I do.

The frozen yogurt featured in these images from Boss Dog, is one product like that.

But you can find lots of others, plus you can eve make your own, using low sugar yogurts etc...

Just remember, moderation and proper portioning are key, but a nice tasty frozen treat can not only cool your pupper down, but also give them some wonderful joy when the temperature rockets up.
